What is SOPA and how does it affect us all? Mafalda explains it to us.
This week, the protest against the United States laws SOPA and PIPA is gaining momentum. Major companies in the industry including Google, Wikipedia, Yahoo, Twitter, Mozilla, among others, have joined this cause. In this article, we will explain what the SOPA and PIPA laws are and how they can affect people who do not live in the United States, where this draft law is being worked on and will be enforced. The SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act), presented in the United States in October 2011, aims to combat the illegal downloading of copyrighted content uploaded to the Internet. According to Wikipedia: "the actions proposed against the website could include:
- Restriction of access to companies that provide payment facilitation services such as PayPal or that offer money in exchange for placing online advertisements.
- Restrictions on search engines that link to such sites.
- Requirement for internet service providers to block access to such sites."
The portal derechoaleer.org has created an infographic, featuring the famous Mafalda, aimed at explaining more about the law and how it can affect us even though we are not governed by U.S. law. According to the infographic, this law will affect us all since most of the web infrastructure is located in the United States. See the complete infographic at Derechoaleer.org.
